Someone had brought three bouquets of green-and-white balloons and staggered them along the length of the Solaresâ front porch. Anneliese stood off to the left of the middle grouping and leaned around one of the helium-filled spheres to catch a brief glimpse of Matt.
He stood next to Mrs. Solares, and Annelieseâs stomach did a backflip when he casually put his arm around the womanâs shoulder and leaned down to say something to her.
Anneliese knew he was sharing some word of encouragement, not the same types of things he shared with her in the shadow of the lighthouse. But the simple gesture took her mind back to Provident Pointâand thoughts about how she never wanted to leave this place.
She loved the freedom sheâd found here. She loved the voice she was growing intoâshe was taking Pastor Ruizâs lesson to heart and speaking up with confidence. She loved being a part of a community concerned for the well-being of others, a place with a can-do spirit.
But most of all, as she snuck another look around the balloons, she loved the time she spent with Matt. In fact, if she chose to be honest with herself, sheâd say she was falling in love with Mattâeven if that was a ridiculous notion.
Her heart had never embraced feelings like this before. Sheâd never allowed herself to go in that direction. Sheâd always believed she wasnât meant to date like other people did, but instead would be paired off in an arrangement that was more business than fairy tale.
And indeed, everything about her time with Rafael had been just thatâan exercise in checking boxes until they got to the altar to check the final box. Her relationship with him had only been about duty.
But the time sheâd spent with Matt was different than any time sheâd spent with anyone, ever. He took the time to explain things to her. He valued her opinion. He clearly wanted what was best for her and took the time to hear her out and offer his own thoughts in return.
She also noticed him like she'd never noticed any other man. She couldn't quit giving a slight bend forward from her waist, just to look past the green and white balloons. Today, he wore a collared knit shirt in a dark forest green with the Helping Hands Homes logo embroidered on the chest in white thread. He had a pair of khaki slacks on and shiny brown dress shoes. His hair spiked up just a little bit in front, and the grin he wore on his face was relaxed. She knew it would circle through her mind for days.
David Long joined the group assembled on the porch by leaping over the three steps from the sidewalk.
âItâs time to celebrate!â David jingled a set of keys between two fingers. âThis is a milestone day.â
A group of Port Providentâs most well-known people had gathered on the lawn, including City Councilwoman Angela Ruiz and her nephew, Pastor Marco Ruiz, who was the Solares familyâs pastor at La Iglesia.
